FANNING ISLAND
Fanning Island was discovered in 1798 by Captain Edmund Fanning. It is a large
atoll about 18 km long and 11 km wide. The total land area is about 33.7 sq. km.
Fanning Island is under the Republic of Kiribati, where the island council is the
main head of local government on the island. The island does not contain any
power or indoor plumbing (with the exception of the restrooms built by Norwegian
Cruise Lines at the dock).

LOCATION
Fanning Island is located 1,000 miles south of Hawaii, about 285 km northeast of
Christmas Island, and 228 nautical miles north of the equator. High-speed
tenders deliver passengers the short distance from the cruise ship to the dock.

LANGUAGE AND CURRENCY
The main language on the island is the Kiribati language. English is taught to the
schoolchildren before fifth grade. U.S.dollars are accepted for local crafts.

TRANSPORTATION AROUND THE ISLAND
By foot or bicycles.

SHOPPING
The islanders make several nice crafts to buy, shell bracelets, turtles and
necklaces, grass skirts and palm frond baskets. You can also find hand-carved
wood items, such as daggers and swords.

HELPFUL HINTS
Fanning Island is always the subject of discussion among cruise passengers
who cruise Hawaii. Some people absolutely hate it. While others, like myself,
thought it was well worth the two sea days to get there and back, for a
once-in-a-lifetime experience. Don't try to compare the tiny atoll with privately
owned islands in the Caribbean. Yes, there's limited facilities, too many flies, etc.
This is part of the charm. The main attraction is the sweet, gracious people who
live there, especially the adorable children.

HIGHLIGHTS OF FANNING ISLAND
Napali Beach
If you book a shore excursion to Napali Beach, the tenders will take you to a
private beach with hammocks, floates and bar service (though no restrooms!). It's
much easier to interact with the local residents here than at the crowded main
beach. Enjoy your time at Napali Beach then catch the boat back over to the main
island for lunch and to browse the tables of crafts.

SCHOOLCHILDREN PERFORMANCES
Groups of children perform a variety of native dances and songs for arriving cruise
passengers.
